Ali Chem is an educational combinatorial logic puzzle game for GCSE Chemistry students in the UK.
It provides a virtual chemistry set – a safe, creative, and engaging way for students to improve and assess their understanding of chemical elements, compounds, and reactions as required for GCSE.
Ali Chem is a single-player game designed for smartphones and tablets running iOS or Android operating systems.
Please try the playable prototype below.
Ali Chem has been designed in alignment with the AQA GCSE Chemistry syllabus and in collaboration with an experienced chemistry teacher and examiner.
The game includes
-
tutorials to remind students of key concepts and terms
-
puzzles to test their practical knowledge
-
quizzes to validate learning
It also aims to provide context for potential careers in chemistry, through demonstration of real-world applications of chemistry in food and flavour.
Ali Chem will be going into development soon.

I wish I had had access to a resource like this much sooner! I can think of dozens of my pupils who would have found this app a great help with their GCSE Chemistry. I think the game-style approach would help my borderline grade C pupils to raise their motivation and achievement, and I am quite certain that more of the higher achievers would want to go on to A-level if they found the essential learning in GCSE Chemistry a bit more fun.
This app is beautifully presented with clear, uncluttered, attractive visual presentation, as well as concise, clear wording. The light touch gamification of difficult, potentially tedious aspects of the subject is just what is needed for today’s students. I like the way that rewards are quickly earned, and nuggets of extra knowledge, in the form of information about interesting complex models, are just what is needed to capture the imagination and inspire pupils to find out more for themselves.
